Wishlist Wednesday #36

Wishlist Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Dani over @Pen to Paper and is a great way of showing off the books that we are dying to get our hands on :)

On the Island - Tracey Garvis Graves

When thirty-year-old English teacher Anna Emerson is offered a job tutoring T.J. Callahan at his family's summer rental in the Maldives, she accepts without hesitation; a working vacation on a tropical island trumps the library any day.

T.J. Callahan has no desire to leave town, not that anyone asked him. He's almost seventeen and if having cancer wasn't bad enough, now he has to spend his first summer in remission with his family - and a stack of overdue assignments - instead of his friends.

Anna and T.J. are en route to join T.J.'s family in the Maldives when the pilot of their seaplane suffers a fatal heart attack and crash-lands in the Indian Ocean. Adrift in shark-infested waters, their life jackets keep them afloat until they make it to the shore of an uninhabited island. Now Anna and T.J. just want to survive and they must work together to obtain water, food, fire, and shelter.

Their basic needs might be met but as the days turn to weeks, and then months, the castaways encounter plenty of other obstacles, including violent tropical storms, the many dangers lurking in the sea, and the possibility that T.J.'s cancer could return. As T.J. celebrates yet another birthday on the island, Anna begins to wonder if the biggest challenge of all might be living with a boy who is gradually becoming a man.

This book sounds amazing. It wouldn't be my usual read and based on the cover, I probably wouldn't have picked it up in a bookstore. But after reading the blurb I instantly added it to my wishlist. It sounds like such an emotionally charged, exciting and thrilling read and I just want to read about their survival after the accident and how they live together on the island. The reviews for it have been amazing too so it seems like a great read all round. It seems like a holiday read but I don't reaaally want to be reading a book about plane crashes and being deserted on an island when I already hate flying. I think I'll buy it sometime later this year after I've been on holiday!

  1. I actually read this last month, and I liked it. BUT, I must warn you, it isn't so much a story of survival, but more of relationships. It was....interesting to say the least lol. Hope you get it soon! -Phil@stackofharbacks

  2. This one definitely sounds interesting. I don't know what to think of though. A 30 year old and a 17 turning 18 year old? I hope you like it and get your hands on it!

  3. Definitely a step in a different direction with this one!!
Sounds pretty good though - I am intrigued to see what happens, and how the relationship between the two, very different characters evolves.

It probably is best to wait until you've been on your holiday to read it though, haha! :)

    Great pick!

  5. I agree, no plane crash books until after you finish traveling! This sounds like a good summer read. I'm a little hesitant about where they seem to be going with the relationship, but it'd be interesting to see how it all works out. I hope you get it!
