Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.
One of the things that can ruin a story for me or atleast make it harder to read and enjoy is the use of dialect as a narrative. If it is done properly it enhances the authenticity of the tale and makes the character more relatable and realistic. But if it done wrong it can be so confusing and makes reading the book difficult.
As for more of a plot device that annoys me; love triangles. Love triangles can be both annoying and exciting, but when their written realistically they can be brilliant plot devices. Most of the time though they're juvenile, annoying and so frustrating!
One of my favourite writing/plot devices? Changing POVs. For example, I love George R. R Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series and I love how there are so many different POV chapters, which means we get to see the story unfolding through different characters eyes, see their true feelings and intentions etc. Done properly it is exciting and interesting. Done wrong it can be totally confusing.
Hi! New follower here. It's funny how love multiple points of view and so many others on this hop keep writing that they hate them. I love them sometimes and hate them others. It depends on how the author does it. Thanks for sharing.

My Friday Hops
Love triangles annoy me as well!
ReplyDeleteI love dialect that is well done. Maybe it's because I'm Southern and I can read Southern accents easily, but if it's good I enjoy it. (If it's not that's another story)
My follow friday! Please visit!
If love triangles are well developed, I don't mind them...but because they are used so often, I have started to become annoyed with them! Thanks for stopping by my FF- new GFC follower !!!

Thanks for stopping by! Sorry I am so late on returning the follow. Between the hurricane and my husband being deployed to New York for disaster relief life was super busy this weekend.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week!
